Losing a loved one, getting fired from a job, a divorce or other difficult situations can lead a person to feel sad, lonely and scared. It’s important to know that these feelings are normal reactions to life’s stressors. Most people feel low and sad at times.
However, for individuals who are diagnosed with “clinical” depression, the manifestations of low mood are much more severe and persist longer. People struggling with depression often describe:
- Feelings of emptiness
- Loss of interest in things that they used to enjoy
- Feeling isolated-alone, even when surrounded by others
- Being irritable or angry more than they use to be
- Feeling helpless or hopeless
- Sleep problems-either sleeping too much or trouble sleeping
Just like other common illnesses, depression is not your fault, it’s nothing you’ve caused. Like many other illnesses, effective treatment exist to help ease and manage the struggle you feel.
